Still Life In Places
I had no clear plan for the color composition here, as demonstrated by my chaotic brushstrokes.
I seriously contemplated leaving the dramatic white negative space.
After masking the main composition I had a blast just throwing paint and ground on the paper. I wanted as much texture and depth I could achieve.
My goal here was a vase that was so real you could pluck it right off the paper and plant your own tree.
One of my favorite pieces of the series. The vase was two hours of layering the pinks and reds.
This was the first of three painting using a heavily textured paper. My expectations were low at first but as the paint was applied I adapted to what the surface wanted.
After finishing the background, I was nervous about moving forward because I was so pleased with the outcome.
I am sharing this stage because of the worn, textured appearance of the curtain. There are often small aspects of a painting that become unexpectedly interesting during the process.
The background was a challenge. I ended up with several hours of layering and graphite penciling to achieve what my heart was after.
After I finished this stage of the painting I spent days gazing at the vase. Wondering how in the world did you paint this. I simply replied to myself. It wasn’t just you- It was you and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Each painting reflects a moment, a place, or a memory—developed slowly through observation, revision, and quiet reflection.
While the work is still unfolding, the direction has become clear. What began as individual studies has grown into a unified body of work rooted in experience, solitude, and persistence.
